Young Stock Targets:

The Herd has been weighed and currently averages 494kg as mixed aged cows. However, the individual variations are significant due to cow breed ranging from Jersey's to British Friesians.

However, with our crossbreeding program and target to increase average cow size we have selected Bull teams to deliver a more even batch of heifers.

Bull team avg. weight 2012: 499.5kg

Bull team avg. weight 2013: 505kg

Bull team avg. weight 2014: 531kg

Therefore the target weights for heifers born in the various years are

Target weight 2013 born: 497 kg

Target weight 2014 born: 500 kg

Target weight 2015 born: 513 kg

62 animals were treated with CIDRs, 42 of these done at the PSM, 20 late calvers done 3 weeks in.

The Key changes to mating during 2014 were :

  • Creating a list of animals to breed straight to beef – all CIDRs and low performers not bred to dairy
  • Better recording and analysis of numbers mated
  • Metricure system – checking for infections every 3 weeks, anything with whites was treated. 9.4% had some form of treatment for this
  • Heifers: Scratchies on heifers, these were identified by Charlie and the non dairy team daily, with everything drafted, Jim, Joe and Arnon checked and AI’d daily. After 10d, the remainder were synchronised. After mating animals were put to the bulls
